Web-based research project.
Known worldwide for its white marble, the Italian region of Carrara is rarely recognised by the key role it played in European (hi)stories of resistance. Confronted with a romanticized vision of ‘Michelangelo’s mountain’ that glossed over the political dimension, we decided to start working in the collection and documentation of materials. To these end, we collaborated with self-managed archives (i.e. Archivio Gogliardio Fiaschi, Grupo Germinal Carrara, A.N.P.I. Montignoso).
From an interdisciplinary approach, we explored the idea of alternative archival narratives as ur first long-term collaboration in 2017. Drawing on materials produced over a year, we traced connections between artistic strategies, ethnographic research, and the engagement with anarchist movements. ‘La Fossa’ attempted to contribute to alternative memories and images of resistance. The new narratives generated co-opt artistic languages, as can be seen in the repository resultant of this endeavour: www.lafossadegliangeli.com. Here we pursued the production of new representations that integrated both forgotten (hi)stories and the current efforts to keep that heritage in action.
