Primo Maggio - with Javier Ruiz

HD video, 7 min., stereo sound, 2017.

These images document Tuscan narratives of labour politics and resistance. The film investigates the idiosyncratic May Day celebration in Carrara, a historic stronghold of Italian anarchism, closely tied to quarrymen’s movements and anti-fascist struggles. Drawing on visual anthropology, the work presents a complex interplay between “tradition” and “modernity,” showing how annual practices render these categories contingent. As Hobsbawm observed, “tradition” is thus invented.
